SATURDAY WEEKENDER

Beverley 14:40 There are several first time winners in this Conditions stakes for 2 year old Colts and Geldings over 5f. The ground is reported as firm at present and that once again plays into the hooves of many of the runners here. Furiant takes joint favouritism in this contest and the manner of his victory the last time out was very impressive. Mark Johnston had some good victories at York last week and his runners are in fine form with a double yesterday. The main danger could come in the form of Galipoli who’s another first time out winner at Doncaster and on this sort of ground. Richard Fahey also had a double yesterday and brings this horse here on the back of that impressive display and with a month rest under his belt. The horse is currently 5/1 and could be worth chancing each way but may well just bump into one here. First Selection was also a winner the last day but his victory was extremely facile as the 2nd fav was pulled up at Southwell and there was very little else in the race. Mark Johnston’s horse gets the nod here and at the prices it’s a straight win for the selection in what could be a competitive race Furiant (WIN)

Goodwood 16:05 Royal Warranty may be the value in a race ran over 1m6f and Andrew Balding’s filly is consistent with the only caveat that her more impressive form is on the AW. She should be capable of further progression and at 4 year old may still have learning left in her, and especially in this company. She failed to peg back one rival the last day at a track that is known for it’s undulations and she should be stripped fitter for that race. Boite could be another horse worth noting in this contest and running of her current mark could be thrown in here at the weights. Warren Greatrex is normally associated with jumping horses and this French mare could be a huge danger to the selection but has been somewhat disappointing and the festival winning trainer is hoping Sam Hitchcott can change that here. Litigant and Le Maitre Chat are two consistent mares and will be both looking to keep up their impressive recent runs but the selection stays at Royal Warranty Royal Warranty (E/W)

Catterick 16:10 Value could be the name of the game in this class 3 handicap over the 7f and the hugely consistent Evanescent runs in the race and is very much the eye catcher on the form. John Quinn’s 6 year old has run into the frame 4 of the 5 times and has Joe Doyle aboard again. The jockey has a win, a place and a creditable 5th place to his name when taking the mount. You would think the morning line price of 13/2 could be excellent each way value and the horse is taken to at least run a place again. In Focus is another course and distance winner who may have found stall 11 too much of an obstacle to overcome last time and could well come on for that run here. The horse likes it at the North Yorkshire track and could well run another big race here. He is nicely drawn too which is another bonus. Finn Class and Fieldgunner Kirkup may also run well, the former has been steadily improving in the handicap sphere and the latter is an older favourite who could still have a few good runs in him. Evanescent (E/W)
