16:10 Newmarket – The Dubai Cesarewitch Stakes
With thirty-one runners, only four winning favourites in the last thirty years and four winners at odds of 50/1 or above since 2008, the Cesarewitch can be a fiendishly difficult race to decipher. That said, on paper there looks to be a few who would have to be considered in with live chances.
The first of these is Land Of Oz who won a trial race over course and distance last month, staying on well and looking like there could be more to come. That race was on a faster surface than he will encounter today, and his will be his first run in a race with so many in opposition but he does have winning form in softer conditions and prior course form is always a plus so I would be surprised if he weren’t able to grab some place money.
Next on the shortlist is Buildmeupbuttercup who is one of three Willie Mullins’ runners in the race and with Frankie Dettori in the saddle looks to be the most likely to give the Closutton trainer back-to-back victories. Proven over the trip and a winner in similar conditions, he will be staying on when others have given up and for that reason rates a live each way option.
Timoshenko has won his last six and enters the reckoning given hie is also proven over extreme distances having won over two and a half miles at Goodwood last time out, although all his victories have come on good or good-to-firm ground so the forecast conditions would temper enthusiasm somewhat.
At a bigger price, Themaxwecan looks a decent each way shout considering he is two wins from two when racing over a two-mile trip with James Doyle in the saddle and was staying on strongly on both occasions so promises to stay the extra couple of furlongs, while Ranch Hand was an impressive winner at Haydock in soft ground last month and is another who could improve further for the step up in trip.
