SUNDAY WEEKENDER

14:45 Southwell Despite a less than advantageous draw I’m hoping the Andrew Balding trained Magic Pass can go close. A fourth placed finish last time out was more encouraging. Ideally I think the horse needs further than a mile but if Oisin Murphy gives the three year old a more positive ride he could go close. Ceyhan looks a worthy favourite after three consecutive placed finishes and no doubt will be on the scene once more. Flashy Snapper is the one I fear most. Simon Crisford has a great strike rate here on the artificial surface at Southwell and the booking of top jockey Silvestre De Sousa is certainly a plus. A lot will be taken on trust though with only one appearance as a two year old in which he finished ninth but he’s up to winning a race of this nature however we’re opting for the each way alternative. MAGIC PASS (E/W)

17:40 Southwell Our second selection comes in a very competitive looking seven furlong contest in the last race on the card at Southwell. On the formbook Quadriga is well up to winning a race of this nature. He now resides at a much lower handicap mark than he’s won at and if he returns to anywhere near his best could claim victory. However a barren spell in recent times doesn’t fill me with a great deal of confidence about a horse with a short price. Canford Belle is the one to plump for today. A preference for 7f-1m she gets her trip today and although inconsistent her last three efforts on the all-weather over seven furlongs has produced two top four finishes. Now running off a generous rating she may do better than her price suggests. CANFORD BELLE (E/W)
