We begin our day with a novice handicap chase that sees seven scheduled to go to post. The selection for this race is Bally Braes, who is the only one of the field who has won over todays’ trip and Ryan Hatch’s claim means he is effectively racing from just a 1lb higher mark today. He looked likely to finish a lot closer than fourth on his last outing until a bad mistake two from home but in truth was lucky to even finish and with better jumping should be able to win today.
The main danger looks to be Ready Token who steps up in trip today but has been eased a further 3lbs following a third placed finish at Plumpton earlier this month. He is yet to win a race over jumps in eight attempts but has a 50% strike rate for placing and should be winning a race soon.
Bally Braes (WIN)
15:25 Warwick
We stay at Warwick for the next race and take in another handicap chase, this time over twenty one furlongs. The selection is Horizontal Speed who ran an absolute blinder to finish fourth in the novice handicap chase at Cheltenham earlier this month. Prior to Cheltenham he ran out a fifteen length winner over todays’ race distance at Wetherby and was second to Saphir Du Rheu (who has since finished second in the World Hurdle) at Plumpton the time before that. With the sixth in the novice handicap chase going on to win since the form is already starting to hold up well and Horizontal should be the one to beat here.
The most likely to challenge looks to be Seventh Sky who has won twice and placed once in his last five runs and is proven over todays’ trip. A 2lbs drop in the weights takes him back to his last winning mark and he could be the one for any forecast backers.
Of the remainder, Midnight Belle is worthy of a mention as she is the only course and distance winner of the field and has won four from eight over twenty one furlongs, although finished behind Seventh Sky last time out and runs off the same mark here today.
Horizontal Speed (WIN)
15:50 Kempton
We move over to Kempton for our final selection, who runs in this novices handicap hurdle over twenty one furlongs. New Horizons arrives here as the early favourite but has raced over course and distance previously when beaten by twenty six lengths. He has also attempted todays’ trip at Ludlow without success and hasn’t really shown enough to suggest he can be backed with any conviction.
Next in the betting comes Lewis who does at least have a little form to offer with two second placed finishes over twenty and twenty two furlongs. He struggled to last home over twenty five furlongs when last seen so should find todays trip more to his liking but a chance is taken on Under The Phone.
Our selection is proven over course and distance and although the bare form suggests only moderate attempts in his last two runs both these races were in higher grades. With his previous career win and placed efforts coming at this grade and over todays’ trip he should be able to make his mark here.
