THURSDAY RACING TIPS

16:15 Salisbury

Tempus is the mount of the flying Hollie Doyle and has been enjoying a good season. He was last seen winning a handicap at Ascot and placed in the Royal Hunt Cup, the time before. Although he’s been climbing up the ratings, he has a bit to find today and is stepping up to Group company. He might find it hard to reverse the form with Modern News.

Berkshire Shadow had nice form as a two year-old, culminating in a fourth placed finish behind Native Trail in the Dewhurst. He’s not had a bad three year-old season either, finishing fifth in the Guineas behind Coroebus and behind the latter in the St James’ Palace at Royal Ascot. He has gone the opposite way in his last two runs though, which is concerning. He has a nice draw and connections are in creditable form but he might be feeling the effects of the last few runs. He seems opposable today.

Modern News is the charge of Charlie Appleby and William Buick, who are doing well lately. Although he disappointed at Pontefract on his recent start, he has some good form throughout the season. Including a narrow defeat in a Group race at Epsom behind last years winner, Megallan. He has the best form in the race and this is a good race to steer him back on track.

MODERN NEWS (WIN)

An intriguing contest with an unexposed top weight. One given a questionable run seven days ago and an improving three year-old from the mighty Gosden stable.

Merlin’s Beard could be the pace angle here, having won from the front end of the field on previous attempts. His record of two victories and two places, over 12 furlongs, is noteworthy and his jockey and trainer are in reasonably good form. He’s a course and distance winner and doesn’t deserve to be at longer odds.

Old Port has won twice in as many starts over 12 furlongs and although he has to shoulder a hefty weight today the jockey and trainer combination are in decent form. He might well give a good account of himself again today but may find one just too good in this hot contest.

Neandra is possibly the one to beat. This three year-old filly surely hasn’t reached her best yet and though up 8lbs, she’s is still interesting. Her jockey and trainer in fabulous form and horse is 1 from 2 over the All-Weather surface. There is a lot to like about her and she ticks off most boxes.
