THURSDAY FLAT RACING TIPS

13:35 Newmarket

Mr Professor has looked a different horse since switching to Alice Haynes and there is a suspicion that he has not yet reached his peak, however a further 6lbs rise for victory last time out will make things tougher and for that reason I am happy to look elsewhere.

Noisy Night is another who has gone up in the weights following victory last time out, in this case shouldering a 5lbs rise for a victory at Kempton earlier in the month. That was the third win in a row for the Roger Charlton two-year-old but a step up in trip and a switch from AW to turf means there is enough of a question mark for me to want to take him on.

With this in mind we turn to Sed Maarib who admittedly had no answer to a Charlie Appleby runner at Doncaster earlier in the month but was far from disgraced in second (with the re-opposing Bastogne over two lengths back in fourth), and had earlier put in a taking performance to win by almost five lengths at Beverley in July. I expect the slight step up in trip to eke out further improvement so he gets the nod in a competitive little race.

14:55 Pontefract

A four runner affair that despite the small turnout is still full of intrigue! Bowland Park has already won twice this season but both came over shorter trips so with the increase in weight and the extra distance to contend with he looks vulnerable for win purposes today.

Sir Michael Stoute doesn't tend to send too many runners to Pontefract however has emerged with five victories from just eleven runners in the last twelve months so Tiger Beetle, who has made the frame in each of his last three runs, warrants plenty of respect in search of his maiden career victory. He looks fairly treated on handicap debut however may struggle to get the better of Tim Easterby's Highwaygrey who is somewhat of a course specialist having posted four course and distance victories, mainly in smaller field contests, and races off his last winning mark today.
