VOYAGE CAN RETAIN CROWN IF HEAVENS OPEN

15:00 York

There may be eight runners set to go to post but according to the bookmakers it’s just a two horse contest. Space Blues and Primo Bacio are both former course victors who are short in the betting. Of the two I’d rather side with the Godolphin runner however with the odds currently 11/1 bar the top two I’m going to look and find some value elsewhere.

Now there’s two in the rest of the lineup with course form that really interests me. Sir Busker has only raced here on the Knavesmire once before but managed to claim a second placed finish in the 17 runner Clipper Logistics handicap this time last year. A repeat of that effort, despite now back in group company should see him go well however I’m not overly convinced that he’ll appreciate a return to seven furlongs after his last ten outings coming over further. He may stay on when others falter but some rivals are likely to have more speed in their lockers.

With the ground currently good to firm many of you will think I’m mad even suggesting Safe Voyage however the Met Office is adamant that the heavens will open over York on Friday evening and way into Saturday afternoon. I know it’s foolish to have faith in the British weather but if the experts have it right then Safe Voyage’s chances improve significantly. The oldest horse in the race is desperate for softer ground but holds a fantastic 100% course record and took this race last year. At a current price of 14/1 he looks massive in what looks a weaker renewal than last term. The yard are going well with a handful of recent winners and although he’s not the obvious choice does seem way too big a price to turn down for punters looking for an each way punt.

If you’re backing him ensure you do a rain dance that brings the deluge he’ll need.
