15:10 Cheltenham – Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle
The 19th running of this hurdle contest doesn’t seem to contain some of the big names it’s attracted in the past but only time will tell if one of today’s runners turns out to be as illustrious as the likes of More Of That or Rock On Ruby.
Top national hunt owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede have had some fantastic horses donning their silks in recent years and they aim to retain this race with Wholestone returning to keep his crown. A disappointing effort over three miles last time out sees the horse drop back down in trip and that looks a positive move. An ultra consistent type who more often than not puts in a decent effort and if he can put his most recent run behind him expect a big run. Further to add to Wholestone’s credentials is the fact the horse has never finished outside of the top three in seven runs here at Cheltenham. That sort of record speaks volumes and in a field that looks pretty weak he’ll take all the beating.
Midnight Shadow looks to be a bit of an unknown quantity. The winner of the Scottish Champion Hurdle last year Sue Smith’s charge seems to have a touch of class but perhaps isn’t quite up to the standard needed to win a race like this. That being said however at the age of six he may have room for improvement and looks the most likely to spring a surprise.
Old Guard seems to have been around for ages as somewhat of an old stalwart but it seems surprising to see that he’s only eight years of age. Loved by many in the racing world this horse always gives his all and loves a battle. A multiple course winner who hails from a yard who are bang in form you couldn’t discount him all too readily but having finished behind Wholestone before it seems a minor role is likely once again.
Of the remainder Clyne is approaching the twilight of his career but can often run well and course victor Thomas Campbell may have the credentials to finish close but it’s Wholestone who gets the nod and rightly so.
