TV TIPS (SUNDAY)

15:35 Newmarket – 1000 Guineas

2018 saw the biggest priced winner in the history of the 1000 Guineas when Billesdon Brook defied odds of 66/1 to beat subsequent four-time Group 1 winner Laurens. In fact, four of the last ten winners won at 16/1 or above so it can pay to look at bigger priced runners that have perhaps gone under the radar. Other recent race stats to consider include trainer Aidan O’Brien’s three winners in the last seven years, and Ryan Moore having ridden three winners and three placed efforts from his last seven rides. The Ballydoyle trainer saddles four of the fifteen-strong field, with jockey bookings suggesting that Just Wonderful is the pick of the quartet under Ryan Moore. A prior winner at the course having won The Rockfel, and over a mile in a Group 3 at The Curragh, she hasn’t been seen since finishing fourth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November but did win first time out last season so with winning experience at the course and proven form over the trip she has to be considered for each way purposes.

Another to consider is Skitter Scatter who won her last three races of 2018, culminating in victory over Lady Kaya and Hermosa in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh. The highest rated runner in the race, she will be hoping for a nice strong pace to allow her to pounce late and will be a danger if seeing out this longer trip.

Mot Juste signed off her 2018 campaign by beating Angels Hideaway in the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket but had no answer to stablemate Qabala on return in the Nell Gwyn Stakes last month. They occupied first and second on that occasion but it was Qabala who settled it with a devastating turn of foot, finishing very strongly to win by almost two lengths. That was a very eye-catching performance and took her record to two wins from two, both coming here at Newmarket. It may seem a little obvious opting for the favourite but with course form and a recent run under her belt I think she is the one they all have to beat.

A final mention should also go to course and distance winner Iridessa who was behind Lady Kaya at Leopardstown in the Guineas Trial last month but is two from two over a mile so shouldn’t be underestimated.
