Newbury 14:15 The Group 3 Legacy Cup stakes kicks off the first visit of the afternoon to Newbury and David Simcock sends likely favourite Desert Encounter here in search of a hat trick of wins in the race for the yard having landed the race for the last two years. The Halling gelding landed a listed contest in fine style to start off the season before two decent placed efforts sent him chasing Group 1 honours, but after falling short at that level the last twice there, he has questions to answer back at this level. Second Step beat Desert Encounter already this term and then won a listed contest last time out at Windsor, but the two defeats in between suggest he would be vulnerable back in Group company again today and he may set it up for an improver. One such horse could be Michael Bell’s Fabircate. He was the shock winner of a handicap at Goodwood back in August before following up in commanding fashion at Group 3 level last time out at the same track. The horse took a big step forward that day with a cracking time to boot and he is the confident pick to land the hat trick here today. FABRICATE (E/W)
Newbury 14:50 The Group 2 Mill Reef stakes looks an exciting contest with speedy 2yo types taking to the track for this one. The highly tried Nebo trained by Charlie Hills looked a horse to follow early in the season when he accounted for Frankel colt Westerland in some style on debut, but he has failed to convince in a number of efforts at this level since. There has to be concerns again today despite the booking of Ryan Moore for the ride here today suggesting the yard fancy him. Invincible Army deserves his crack back at this level after romping to an easy success at Kempton in the Group 3 sprint last time out. That form puts him bang in the mix today, but he could just be vulnerable to a more unexposed type. The George Scott trained James Garfield looks a fascinating contender in this one another he went close last time out to pegging back the unbeaten Wells Farrh Go. That form is likely to be very smart considering the time of the race and he has the assistance of Frankie Dettori this afternoon to aid his cause and so he gets the tentative nod in a wide open contest. JAMES GARFIELD (WIN) – NAP
Newbury 15:25 A wide open looking handicap contest to be run over 1m2f for this one and there are a number of well established campaigners for some juggernaut trainers. Sir Michael Stoute’s 4yo Fidaawy looked to have found some more improvement when winning last time out at York and looks a worthy favourite for this one, but Jim Crowley’s mount will need to record yet another career best to land this and he may be vulnerable to an improver. The Luca Cumani trained Banksea has been frustrating to follow with only three wins from 13 starts. There is no doubting his ability and he would be a danger to all if putting his best foot forward today, but his fragile profile makes him hard to recommend despite the assistance of regular rider Jamie Spencer. Godolphin’s Leshlaa was an impressive winner in a Group 2 out in Turkey and successful rider Jimmy Quinn retains the mount here today, so he looks a real danger to all if he can translate that all weather form back to the turf in this one. But a chance is instead taken on a progressive looking 3yo from the Richard Hannon team. Euginio is the mount of Ryan Moore here today as he looks to follow up a gutsy win at Doncaster in mud last week. The yard do well here and know their way to the winner’s enclosure so this unexposed lightly raced type doesn’t have a lot to find to make the frame here and he looks the value back at an each way price. Newbury 16:00 The final visit to Newbury of the day is for the Group 3 World Trophy sprint and some speedy types have stood their ground for this one. The Hamdan Al Maktoum team look to have a strong hand here with last time out winner Waady and multiple Group 2 winner Muthmir. It is interesting to see Jim Crowley plump for the latter despite the former returning to form last time out, but Muthmir has already landed a Group 2 contest this term and has hardly been disgraced in runs behind speedy superstars Lady Aurelia and Baatash. The aforementioned Waady for the John Gosden team performed wonders to nurse this horse back from injury, but this one may just be a step too far. Last year’s winner Cotai Glory is another for the Charlie Hills team and he is entitled to be bang there in the mix again today. He recorded a seasonal best when third behind Marsha in Group 1 company a few starts back, but he hasn’t won since scoring here a year ago. A chance is instead taken on the Clive Cox trained Priceless. Three wins from his last seven starts, and one of those was the Group 2 Temple Stakes this term. He is versatile on the ground and has beaten all of today’s rivals at some point in his career and should go close to another Group win here today. Take Cover looks the main danger after an impressive victory last time out and he will likely give the selection the most to think about here today PRICELESS (E/W)
