15:40 Newbury – Weatherbys Super Sprint A whopping 25 runner field awaits viewers in this annual renewal where the “babies” (two year olds take centre stage. Former winners include Lathom who won two races this past month, Tiggy Wiggy claimed the race back in 2014 and went on to win two Group contests including the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. Wether we see a winner as good as Tiggy Wiggy only time will tell. When analysing this years running there isn’t an abundance of form to go off with most of the runners because of their age and these youngsters can certainly eek out tonnes of improvement from race to race. At big odds the unbeaten course winner Odyssey Girl looks to be massively overpriced and punters looking for each way value shouldn’t look much further. At equally generous odds Electric Ladyland is likely to go better than her seventh in the Windsor Castle and shouldn’t be too far away either. All this being said however the favourite Ventura Rebel deserves his spot at the head of the market. He did very well to finish second in the Norfolk Stakes and in all honesty could’ve gone one better if jockey Paul Hanagan had decided to send him for home earlier. That effort is by far the best form on offer and his Royal Ascot exploits makes him by far the one to beat. It’s not advisable from a betting point of view that you go for a favourite in such a large field but in this instance it’s Ventura Rebel’s race to use and looks the obvious one to be on here. This is a race that is often dominated by the O’Brien yard and this year looks to be more of the same as he heads a three pronged charge from a field of only 10 runners. It’s his son’s horse that is the pick of the fillies and it’s well known I’m a big fan of the 3 year old IRIDESSA. I’ll start by saying she is my main pick for the day at 11/4. She beat O’Brien seniors horse Pink Dogwood less than a month ago back on this very course. She was nearly 4 lengths to the good that day and Pink Dogwood wasn’t able to make much of an impression in the running. The price of 3/1 is just not quite tempting enough for the Moore ridden horse. Personally I’d like to see around 5/1 before I felt it was worth taking on Iridessa to try and reverse recent form.
The aforementioned Star Catcher steps up for the first time into Group One territory for the first time for the Godsen yard. He is looking for someone to figuratively take the reigns from now retired stud Cracksman. Star is supplemented and she is booked with Dettori on board. She has won well at Ascot and has to be a consideration for Frankie fans. She currently sits at 9/2 in the market.
Beckett has two runners, both of his prized girls the De Vega horses are sitting at over 10/1 in the market. They are attractive admittedly at that price but they are not for me. If I was to choose between the two, I’d give the nod to Antonia who has good EW value at 12/1 and has won some pretty tough races this year.
A cracking race to look forward to!
