Although there’s only the seven competitors likely to take part in the fifth race at Haydock this afternoon it remains the setting of our bet of the day.

In all sports when an athlete is at their best they become very difficult to beat and the air of confidence that dominant success brings to the table adds another 10 or 20 percent to their performance. This theory could easily be applied to jockey James Doyle who’s ended up in the winners enclosure on eighteen occasions in the past fortnight alone. He climbs aboard Mubtasim who, despite never winning last year, hails from the in-form yard of trainer William Haggas. A recent return to action should be enough to blow away any cobwebs and with both jockey and trainer having a great start to the season it looks likely that the four year old can add to their winning tallies.

Having won two listed events last term Tabarrak is the rival I fear the most. A lacklustre return to action may be forgiven due to the soft ground that day and the firmer conditions should be more favourable.

Of the remainder So Beloved deserves respect but at the age of 8 seems a shadow of his former self and the same can be said for Absolutely So.
