TV TIPS (SATURDAY)

15:45 Newmarket – Sweet Solera Stakes

The feature race today comes by way of the Sweet Solera Stakes, a Group 3 race for two-year-old-fillies raced over seven furlongs. Won five times in the last ten years by a Godolphin runner, they send La Pelosa in a bid to emerge victorious again. She ran a fantastic race when chasing home the re-opposing Main Edition in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, losing out by just a neck but finishing ahead of a couple of subsequent Group winners in Angels Hideaway and Pretty Pollyanna. That said, she also comes with risks attached as she hasn’t tasted victory since her debut run in the all-weather at Kempton and could only manage third of seven when stepped up to seven furlongs for the first time at Sandown last month, finishing behind Ajrar who also re-opposes here.

Richard Hannon has sent out the last two winners of this race and looks to have a great chance of notching up the hat-trick with the afore-mentioned Ajrar who suffered a few bumps in the early stages and showed signs of greenness before getting the hang of things and finishing strongly to grab second ahead of La Pelosa when last seen. That was her first run on turf and also her first run over seven furlongs so she is entitled to improve and with that in mind she gets the nod for victory.

California Love and Pennywhistle both take big steps up in class following respective victories over course and distance but both look to have exciting futures. Preference of the two would be Pennywhistle given the recent stable form and the booking of top jockey Frankie Dettori but in truth it would be no surprise to see them both involved at the business end of the race.

A final mention goes to Main Edition who disappointed in the Duchess Of Cambridge last time out but had won three times in a row prior to that and is the only previous Group winner in the field. She carries a 3lbs penalty as a result of her Albany Stakes victory and takes on seven furlongs for the first time but finishes off her races well so the step up in trip could yet unlock further improvement.
