15:35 Newbury – Hungerford Stakes (Group 2)
This illustrious contest was established way back in 1949 and as we approach the 69th running of one of Newbury’s showpiece contests we look at this Saturday’s contenders.
As with most of Britain’s top group races the powerhouse of Ballydoyle has a representative. Aidan O’Brien sends Gustav Klimt over the Irish Sea in an effort to atone for his Goodwood defeat. Without a win in his last five efforts you can muster a few reasons not to back him but with this years renewal far from a stellar lineup this may well be the opportunity he needs to get back to winning ways.
Librisa Breeze will relish things if the expected rain continues to pour. As the ground gets softer his chances will improve and with a second in this race last year he’s well and truly in the mix but he’ll need to improve on what he’s done so far this year.
The sentimental racing fans will love to see Breton Rock win this race again and the eight year old has a fantastic record in the contest. A winner in 2014 and places in 2015 and 2017 he’ll have a great chance but sadly age may be catching up with him.
The ever consistent Sir Dancealot deserves a tonne of respect. A very close winner at Glorious Goodwood in his last start he’s progressed well this year but this looks a tougher task and a minor role may be on the cards this time around.
The unknown quantity is the ever consistent Yafta. He needs to step up on what he’s done recently but he looks a likely improver so if his rivals aren’t at their best he may well be their to pounce.
