13:50 Newbury The fate of the Bathwick Tyres Handicap to be run over 7f may just lie between two horses trying to get their season’s back on track today. The first of those is Mark Johnston’s 3yo colt, Rusumaat. The horse posted a career best with an all the way success at Haydock over a mile back in May, but he has lost his way since then and now has some serious questions to answer. He could, however, be rejuvenated by the step back in trip and he could take a hand with more positive tactics from Hamdan Al Maktoum rider Jim Crowley here today. He does have a bit to find however with the John Gosden trained Remarkable, who comes here on a comeback trail of his own after a lacklustre season so far. The horse did give cause for optimism last time out when a staying on sixth placed finish in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and a repeat of that form will likely be good enough to land this one off a 1lb lower mark. Another plus is that stable jockey Frankie Dettori is back in the saddle and he may just be the difference maker here, so he gets the confident nod. REMARKABLE (WIN)

14:10 Market Rasen The Summer Handicap Hurdle is the reason for the visit to Market Rasen in the TV coverage for some top class jumps racing action. An ultra competitive field has stood its ground for this one and last year’s winner Red Tornado is hoping this race can once again rejuvenate his fortunes. The Dan Skelton trained gelding has been badly out of sorts of late, but actually comes in here today 3lb better off than for last year’s and so should give his running based on that. It may pay, however, to stick with an in-form rival and the booking of Sam Twiston-Davies to ride the Dr Newland trained Ebony Express looks significant. The trainer actually won the race two years ago with a horse on almost an identical weight. The horse itself won with gutsy display in a similar contest at Uttoxeter last time out where he took full advantage of his slide in the weights. He was only put up 4lb for the short head margin of victory that day and he looks poised for another big run here today, so he is the selection. Star Foot may be the biggest danger with back to back successes already this summer and the booking Sean Bowen is a statement of intent from the yard. EBONY EXPRESS (WIN)

14:25 Newbury The 2017 renewal of the Steventon Stakes looks a fascinating contest over the 1m2f trip today. Spark Plug, trained by Brian Meehan, will come into the race as the worthy favourite after an impressive wide-margin success last time out in a listed contest at Sundown. He retains the services of Ryan Moore, but the forecast conditions will give this one great cause for concern having never won in them. Roger Varian’s Mount Logan would be a danger to all if finding his best form of last season, but despite the booking of champion jockey favourite Sylvestre De Sousa, he is best watched here today. A chance is instead taken on the chances of Hugo Palmer’s unexposed 3yo Best of Days. The Azamour colt looked to be on the road to superstardom after a highly successful 2yo campaign, but he ran no sort of race and never beat a rival home when making his seasonal debut at Royal Ascot in the Group 2 King Edward Stakes. He is well worth another chance here and if he can resume his progress today against his elders, then this unexposed horse may just take all the beating. He gets the nod at an each way price. 14:40 Newmarket The only visit to racing HQ at Newmarket is for the Aphrodite Stakes which is a fascinating listed contest run over 1m4f. Hugo Palmer’s Apphia took a step forward with a respectable fifth in the Ribblesdale at the Royal meeting last month and she looks a worthy favourite here based on that form, but she now comes up against more experienced and in-form rivals for the first time here, so it may pay to look for more value in a competitive field. Jamie Spencer opts to ride the David Simcock trained High Hopes and that booking may be significant for the horse who has come into her own recently with three wins from her last four starts. She overcame a hampered run last time out to score readily at Beverley and she is undoubtedly one of the key players here again today, but she may just be vulnerable to an improver. One such horse could just be the Luca Cumani 3yo God Given. The Nathaniel filly recorded some smart form behind two rivals who went on to land Group races in Shutter Speed (a dual Group 3 winner and fourth in a Group 1 since) and Sobetsu (Group 1 winner). She confirmed her potential with an easy victory in maiden company at Haydock last month where she never got out of second gear. If she now finds the natural progression that she should do then she will be a danger to all in this field and looks a monstrous each way price, so gets the confident each way nod. GOD GIVEN (E/W)

15:00 Newbury The Hackwood Stakes looks set to be the scene of a superstar sprinter on the latest leg of his comeback trail. The horse in question in none other than the Charlie Hills speedster, Magical Memory. The horse started the season in decent enough fashion with a runner up spot behind Tasleet in the Group 2 Duke of York stakes and that form has been franked twice since by that rival. The worry was that the horse ran no sort of race in the Diamond Jubilee before starting to repair his reputation with a battling victory in a conditions race at Haydock last time out. That should have put him spot on for this one where he is reunited with Frankie Dettori and he gets the confident nod to land the spoils here today. The Hugo Palmer trained Koropick rates a likely danger after he landed his first Group 3 success at Newcastle in the Chipchase Stakes last time out with an impressive run when holding off the re-opposing Intisaab that day. But the main danger will likely come from Richard Hannon’s Tupi with Ryan Moore on board. The horse won the Cammidge Trophy in some style at Doncaster on Lincoln day before being well behind the selection in the Duke of York. He did turn that form around when finishing ahead of the selection in the Diamond Jubilee so is the clear danger to the selection based on that. MAGICAL MEMORY (WIN) – NAP

15:20 Market Rasen The second visit to the jumps track is for the stamina gruelling Summer Plate ran over 2m5f. The race has again attracted runners from the biggest stables of the national hunt scene. Nicky Henderson sends Days of Heaven here in search of a four-timer after three wide-margin successes at Stratford, Uttoxeter and Kempton. He has a further hike in the weights to deal with here, however, so his winning run may be coming to an end. Paul Nicholls’ Alcala has been in impressive form its last four runs also with three wins and a runner up spot his return from that. He’s up a further 5lb to a career high mark of 147 and that has to be a worry for both the aforementioned horses with no horses rated higher than 143 having won this race in the last decade. A chance instead is instead taken on the Ian Williams trained Poker School. The horse won three of his four starts in the winter last term, but has struggled off his revised mark since. He now finds himself tumbling back down the weights to a workable mark and he looks poised for a big run this afternoon, so gets the nod at an each way price. POKER SCHOOL (E/W)

15:35 Newbury The Newbury Super Sprint is traditionally one of the most exciting and competitive races of the entire flat season and this year’s renewal looks to be no exception. William Haggas’ filly One For June caught the eye with a smart victory last time out at Lingfield under similar conditions. She did it nicely that day as if the penny was finally dropping at the third time of asking and she could be a danger to all today. But it may instead pay to side with two unbeaten horses in a races where in-form runners often land the spoils. The first of these is the Clive Cox trained Snazzy Jazzy who could not have been anymore impressive when hacking up on debut at Goodwood when putting a number of high profile rivals to the sword in a matter of strides. He has top weight today for that as a result, but when you consider that two of the last three winners have won this race off a similar weight then he must be a cracking bet and gets the first of two each way nods at a massive looking price. The other unbeaten horse is the Michael Does trained Time Trail. It is hard to understand just exactly what this horse has achieved in two narrow wins at Beverley and Catterick, but the battling qualities of the Swiss Spirit filly may just be seen in the best light here and she can also take a hand at a massive each way price in an ultra competitive field.
