TV TIPS (SATURDAY)

15:35 York – Catherine Memorial Sprint Handicap

Although we have a listed contest earlier in the day today’s showpiece contest sees the sprinters take centre stage.

The precocious talent of promising three year olds are set to do battle and with 20 runners likely to go to post it looks as competitive as ever.

Young apprentice jockey Jason Watson is causing quite a stir having bagged five winning rides in the past two weeks and with him set to climb aboard the likely favourite Foxtrot Lady he has a very serious chance of adding to his tally. The Andrew Balding filly didn’t live up to expectation in he first seven starts but came to life in the past month by bagging victories at both Chester and Carlisle. This however is a marked step up in competition and the course at York is far removed from those she’s tackled at the aforementioned venues.

In the lineup there’s set to be another three horses who’ve racked up recent winning sequences in the form of Savals, Jawwaal and Gabrial The Saint. Of the trio it’d be John Gosden’s Jawwaal who looks most appealing. The lightly raced runner has had the form of his two year old runs boosted this year and if he can transfer his recent all-weather success back to turf looks worthy of punting this afternoon.

Beshaayir is a very intriguing runner who, despite a disappointing run last time out, still holds entries the prestigious Commonwealth Cup and Coronation Stakes. Clearly trainer William Haggas holds her in high regard and for that reason alone is worth keeping a close eye on.

At bigger prices Snazzy Jazzy and Bambino Lola deserve respect. It’s not often you’ll see top jockey Ryan Moore ride a Clive Cox trained runner so the jockey booking is certainly noteworthy. A drop back down to six furlongs looks to be a beneficial move but his liking for soft ground may well be Snazzy Jazzy’s undoing. If he can handle the drier conditions expect a much improved run from what he showed previously.

Bambino Lola is another who should appreciate today’s distance after disappointing over seven furlongs in her two most recent efforts. Lesser know trainer Adam West has done well recently and if he has his charge fully wound up could surprise a few.
