15:40 Newmarket – Cesarewitch
There’s cavalry charges and then there’s The Cesarewitch! A staggering 34 runners are scheduled to lineup in what is the biggest field in UK flat racing. Needless to say with so many competitors locating the winner becomes a near impossible task but the Irish trained Golden Spear could well be the answer. Fifth in this contest last year he returns to aim to finish better this time around. His second in a trial last time out isn’t bad form and the race threw up an odd result as the field let the eventual winner get too much of a lead. The dual purpose 7 year old is quite lightly raced this year, compared to today’s rivals, and may be a bit fresher than most. The long trip over the sea to Newmarket certainly isn’t for a holiday and connections would only send him if they thought he had a decent chance. At a bigger price he looks a value each way selection.
The favourite Stratum deserves his spot at the head of the market and despite doing poorly in The Ebor had been very impressive up until that point. If he can put that run behind him he’s sure to be in the mix.
At larger odds the top class hurdler Limini deserves a tonne of respect and if he can transfer his hurdles form to the flat should also be in the firing line.
All the above being said however with a race so open it’s a contest every punter should approach with a whole heap of caution.
