TV TIPS (SATURDAY)

14:40 Kempton – Lanzarote Stakes

One of the biggest handicaps to start a new year as a large field are set to embark on another renewal of The Lanzarote Stakes.

Past winners include the likes of Tiutchev and Nycteos and in recent years Yala Enki, Tea For Two and 2017’s victor Modus who have all gone on to be top level chasers subsequently. Wether or not this years race will produce a horse with a bright future only time will tell but as always Saturday’s showcase race looks as competitive as ever.

Winner of the race two years back Modus was trained by Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls who sends Darling Maltaix to try and emulate his stablemates triumph. He looked blistering when claiming victory at Ascot last time out but a 12lb rise looks steep and despite the 5lb claim of jockey Lorcan Williams he’s going to struggle in this more competitive race.

Likely favourite Kloud Gate aims for a hat trick of wins after success at both Leicester and Doncaster. He won impressively and deserves to be near the head of the market but those two events were in much smaller fields in lower grades. A step up to this level is an almighty leap and although he may well be an improving horse he’s far too short a price to be punted.

Looking for a horse with value has to be the order of the day and at bigger prices I couldn’t put people off of either Doux Pretender and Cotswold Way who have viable each way claims but it’s seven year old Sleep Easy who gets the nod today. A very consistent horse who has only finished outside of the first four once in his last seven races. Trainer Neil Mulholland hasn’t been firing in many winners but it’s very noticeable that it’s rare that he teams up with Jockey Wayne Hutchinson. In their respective careers they have a strike rate close to 20% when combining. Further more they have a place and win rate in excess of 45% as a team and clearly there’s something to be said for this rare duo. A horse that may not get his head in front but certainly has enough in his locker to challenge for a place and looks a value each way punt.
