You have to go back to 2006 to find the last time an Irish trained horse won this race when the Ruby Walsh ridden Dun Doire came from out of the clouds to win. Despite the Irish contingents poor recent record I still believe they come here posing a serious threat. Milan Native looks one of their better chances and seems to have targeted this race all season but I am tempted to stick with runners from this side of the water.

The favourite Happygolucky hasn't really put a foot wrong this season and isn't too badly weighted considering their previous course win. With Kim Bailey taking a strong team to Cheltenham this year he should be in the mix.

That being said I really like Aye Right who, despite being saddled with top weight, looks to have a strong hand. The weight doesn't concern me too much and isn’t enough to put me off. His third in the Charlie hall and second in the Ladbrokes Trophy (known as the Hennessy) is some of the best form on offer and a case could be made to say Aye Right has been desperately unlucky in finding one or 2 too good. He is certainly a battle-hardened horse and although maybe not the classiest type you may prefer a runner that you know will jump well and fight to the end.

An interesting jockey booking in Richard Johnson who takes the ride for the first time which could hopefully aid his chances and hopefully the champ can get more out of him. Would be a lovely story as well with a relatively small trainer in Harriet Graham taking what would undoubtedly be her biggest prize for her fledgling training career.

Alnadam could go well at a big price.

For punters on the hunt for one at a bigger price Alnadam, although he has lots to find at this level, could surprise a few. The rain may have just come in time and the step up in trip should suit. Dan Skelton is having a fantastic season and I wouldn’t be shocked to see his charge play a part.
