SUNDAY WEEKENDER

15.05 Navan The Waterford Stakes is a listed sprint over the 5f minimum trip, but the Navan track places an emphasis on stamina over this trip and that may just suit one horse in particular. The horse in question is the J Stack trained Son Of Rest who already has some smart form in the book including last time out when 2 & 1/2 lengths third to the mighty Caravaggio. There is nothing near that level of horse in this field and this looks a good opportunity for him to get back to winning ways here so he gets the nod. The main danger, as always, will likely come from the Aiden O’Brien yard who send the duo of Cougar Mountain and Alphabet here in opposition. SON OF REST (WIN) – NAP

15.50 Kelso This Kelso Novices Hurdle is one set to be contested by the usual contenders on the northern national hunt circuit with Malcolm Jefferson, Brian Ellison and Rose Dobbin all having strong contenders here. The one to be on however, looks like being the entrant from the Malcolm Jefferson yard, Mayo Star. The mount of the talented Brian Hughes, this horse was a winner of a bumper at Newcastle back in December and there was a lot of positives to take from his hurdles debut back in April. He is likely to find the ground a lot more favourable now and with the application of the first time hood likely to bring more improvement, he gets the nod to land the spoils. Rose Dobbin has booked Colin O’Farrell for the ride on her Coole Hall and he went close at Perth on hurdles debut so looks most likely to pounce if selection falters. MAYO STAR – (WIN)
