The Godolphin duo of Global Storm and Live Your Dream deserve their spots as current joint favourites and demand the upmost respect, especially here at Newmarket. Both have been ultra consistent this term finishing in the money for at least their respective last three starts. Of the two, if I had to, I’d be siding with Charlie Appleby’s runner who’s competed consistently at a better level.
Just a nose behind Global Storm at Ascot last time was Brian Meehan’s Arhturian Fable. There was very little between the two that day and there’s no reason why the Ryan Moore ridden four year old can’t reverse the form. That being said Arthurian Fable is far from prolific with just the one career victory. Should finish in the money but may find a few too good once again.
The second and third in this season’s Northumberland Plate are set to renew their rivalry as both Hochfield and Rajinsky line up. Both have a big win in their lockers on their day but it’s the younger of the two that seems more consistent and has been left alone by the handicap despite that third placed finish. Running off a mark of 93 the Tom Dascombe trained runner shouldn’t be overly inconvenienced by the drop in trip and has what it takes to claim another placed finish.
Although all the talk is for the more well fancied Godolphin charge I feel the other runner that will be adorned with the illustrious Royal Blue silks deserves a serious mention. Volcanic Sky was woeful when returning to English soil, finishing dead last in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot. I’m hoping that effort has blown away any potential cobwebs and he’ll strip much fitter this time around. What’s very interesting is that the gelding’s form over this trip is very impressive having never finished outside of the first three in seven runs around this distance. Now back to his last winning mark the top weight could be a forgotten horse who is clearly a class type having claimed Group 3 success in the past.
