SERGEANT TO SURGE TO KEMPTON SUCCESS

15:30 Kempton

A very tight little race here with only 5 runners but a race packed with future potential. Mostahdaf is a short, priced favourite, trained by the Gosdens who have started the season in blistering form. Mostahdaf has only raced once and was a winner over 7F at Newcastle. He won well there coming away from the horses behind. He should be better for the extra furlong but the race he won was won in a slow time against some very inexperienced horses, he is promising but I do not think he should be a shade above evens in this race.

El Drama is next best in the betting and also comes with good connections (Roger Varian) Only two horses in the field have an official rating and this is rated the highest. He won his only start at 2 in a late season maiden at Doncaster beating Colonel Faulkner who rather let the form down at Musselburgh on Saturday. El Drama has had a run this year finishing third to Apollo One and Megallan. Apollo One ran a reasonable race on AW finals day and Magallan has won since and is an outsider for the 1000 guineas. El Drama didn’t get the run of the race that day, and can improve for the run his form is stronger than that of Mostahdaf. Like the favourite his yard is in form and he will be suited by the extra furlong.

Imperial Sands is one of only two horses to have raced over a mile already winning his only start over course and distance in mid-March. It remains to be seen how strong that form is with the favourite a disappointment that day and none of the principle horses being seen out since. However, the manor of his victory was very taking with him striding clear a furlong out before being eased close home.

King Zain struggled in Group 2 company as a 2YO but won a couple of minor events including one here at Kempton last year. He made his debut over 7F so its likely this trip would be a bare minimum for him. His form is not as strong as some of the others here but he does represent Mark Johnston who bagged a four-timer at Musselburgh on Saturday.

Sergeant Tibbs has had two runs and been priced at 150/1 & 200/1, on both occasions he has outrun his odds greatly. On his debut at Lingfield he was very green being slowly away but then finishing really well into 4th behind a decent Godolphin horse. He then ran in a stronger race and again finished well into second behind a long odds-on horse also owned by Godolphin at Kempton. The time of that race was much quicker than that Imperial Sands registered over the same course and distance. Sergeant Tibbs was beaten only 1 3/4L that day and so recorded a good speed figure himself. This form stands up with anything the field has recorded yet again he is a big price. In a race where there is little between any of the runners the price for Sergeant Tibbs offers tremendous value. Three places would be better, but I fancy him to win so still take the price each way.
