The Sir Michael Stoute trained Laafy is set to be partnered in the saddle by the newly crowned All-Weather champion jockey, Richard Kingscote. He’s won over course and distance (1m 6f) and he should enjoy the ground. There were excuses for his last two runs. However, the downside is that he hasn’t raced for 165 days and isn't guaranteed to be fit for his seasonal return.
Ocean Wind last ran 60 days ago and was pleasing enough, meaning he has fitness on his side. He’s won over the distance before and adores the ground, moreover, he’s the joint second highest rated horse in the race. Running 6th in the Champion Bumper to Ferny Hollow gives him a nice form boost and this, combined with the fitness advantage, could put him in with a chance. A likely player who cannot be readily discounted.
No surprises here! Sir Ron Priestley was second, beaten 2 lengths, to Logician in the fastest ever renewal of the St Leger. He’s been off the track since that race, which, as with Laafy, is a concern, but if he is ready to run, then I don’t see why connections can't continue their good start to the year with what is the classiest horse in the race.
SIR RON PRIESTLEY (WIN)
