14:05 CARLISLE
Jockey Brian Hughes is one of the countries top jumps jockey but doesn’t get as much press as some of the more glamorous names in the saddle but don’t let that put you off backing any of his runners, especially at smaller northern courses. With that in mind his ride in the third race at Carlisle today looks worthy of punting. Six year old Idder has claimed victory here at Carlisle previously and has a great strike rate when teaming up with the aforementioned jockey. The horse has only ever won twice over hurdles, both of which were with Hughes on board. With the jockey back in the saddle, the horse racing over a course it’s won at previously and also dropping back down to a class four race should ensure that Idder has a great chance of claiming victory.
Fellow course and distance victor Viserion may not have done much in his last two runs but looks primed for a better showing especially with trainer Donald McCain having his horses running so well.
Of the rest of the field the three year old Mick The Poser is open for vast improvement and in all honesty could be anything in regards to his capabilities and after just two promising runs so far can go close once again.
IDDER (WIN)
15:50 SOUTHWELL - (BET OF THE DAY)
Over the shortest distance in the UK as the 5 furlong trip at Southwell is actually 4 furlongs and 212 yards. We’ll see sprinters take to the stage in the last race on the card this afternoon. Now when it comes to the all-weather here at Southwell course form is the key. With four former course and distance winners in the field I feel the winner is likely to come from this quartet.
Top weight Llewellyn acts well around here but I feel that sadly the handicapper has given him too much of a burden and at the age of nine the task doesn’t get any easier.
Local trainer Scott Dixon has to be respected and with that in mind his runner Coiste Bodhar deserves some attention. With two more encouraging efforts recently he should be ready to go close.
The horse that gets the vote however is seven year old Borough Boy who comes from a yard who love a winner at this venue. He hasn’t been in great form recently but this infrequent winner now sits three pounds lower in weight than when he was last successful. He drops in to a lower grade and should have enough in his locker to be able to win a race like this.
Honourable mentions should also go to Only Ten Percent and Our Place In Loule who have decent claims of finishing in the money.
BOROUGH BOY (WIN) - NAP
