RACE PREVIEW & TIPS (TUESDAY)

15:30 WETHERBY

There may only be a quartet of runners but the penultimate race from Wetherby looks competitive enough. The current outsider of the four is one of two former course and distance winners and with two victories in his last four starts it’d be foolish to rule out the chances of Wolf Sword especially if the addition of blinkers can bring about further improvement.

Fellow course victor Caraline won a similar contest here at Wetherby on Boxing Day and clearly acts well at this venue. A repeat performance wouldn’t be inconceivable however a whopping seven pound rise in weight seems a tad harsh by the handicapper and that may be enough to put pay to her chances.

If you thought the handicapper had been hash on Caraline they have been even sterner with Clan Legend. A victory at Haydock back on the 30th of December has seen the eight year old gelding rise a staggering 9lbs in weight. I think there’s a bit more talent in the Alexander family trained and ridden runner and is the one who’s likely to put up the biggest test but once again the handicapper may have scuppered any chance of winning.

A second placed effort in a much more competitive class 2 handicap should be enough to ensure Catamaran Du Seuil has the credentials to be victorious. A drop in both class and distance should also aid the Richard Newland trained six year old who enlists the services of top jockey Brian Hughes. All things point towards a big run and looks likely to find his head in front this time around.
