17:45 NEWCASTLE
The opening race on the card this evening gives young apprentice jockeys the chance to shine. The quality of the horses on display are far from world beaters but this contest looks mightily competitive with a case to be made for nearly half the field.
I’m a huge fan of promising jockey Seamus Cronin and his ride Media World certainly looks capable of winning a race like this. The downside however is the very wide draw (drawn in stall 13) and that makes his task far too difficult.
Another with a disadvantageous draw is Vecheka. A promising second placed finish last time should stand him in good stead but once again the draw puts pay to his chances.
There’s two former course winners in the field and it’s Little Kingdom who I fear most. His form has been poor recently but now off a low weight could bounce back with a vengeance but a lot has to be taken on trust after a sequence of disappointing runs.
The horse that gets the verdict has only ever raced on the all-weather three times but Racing Angel has placed once and put up a sterling effort here at Newcastle last time out. A step up in trip should aid the five year olds chances who returns to this venue with a great chance.
