PADDOCKS PATENT (WEDNESDAY)

Of this field of 14 runners only Captain Gerald is to have won over this one mile and a furlong trip. John Ryan’s inmate won at Lingfield on soft ground last month but has been kept busy since. His best efforts do seem to come at that venue though where he tries to dictate from the front and those are the likely tactics to be employed once more under Ryan Powell.

Bob’s Boy was well down the field on his return to the track in May but since then has shown improved levels of form at this trip and slightly further. He drops back in trip following his recent run at Bath on soft ground. However he’s still yet to shed the maiden tag after six starts plus being a son of Showcasing would suggest the forecast quick ground could be against him. 

One of the lesser exposed runners in this field and it one very much of interest is Oasis Moon. Her form figures won’t get you too carried away but they have been over six and seven furlongs respectively, so is stepping up in trip considerably and on pedigree that is a big plus. William Haggas is a shrewd operator and this race looks ideal for her to get her head in front of this lowly mark of 51, which could underestimate her. This is one of Haggas’ more favoured venues when you see his 34% strike rate here. Also Andrea Atzeni gets the leg up, which makes this daughter of Oasis Dream a rather intriguing proposition in this open race.

Oasis Moon (E/W)

This race is now down to six with Bastille Day becoming a non-runner, so the in-form David Elsworth charge won’t be turned out quickly under a penalty.

This does look like a race where the three year old’s will come to the fore receiving weight from their elders. Sir Michael Stoute’s charge El Hayem looked like a fairly useful tool to take forward on the back of his Doncaster success. He settled well, travelled smoothly, which took him to the front possibly earlier than expected but then quickened nicely to put the race to bed. He definitely looks to have more to offer and his opening mark of 88 could be look quite lenient after this race. He was pitched in deep on debut up against some useful sorts in their own right plus being a Stoute representative was always going to come on for that effort.

A yard in fine form of late is Rod Millman’s and he saddles the likeable Sir Roderic. He’s son four of his last six stars, including his previous at this track. We already know he stays well at this mile trip but he really did look in good heart with the way he won 11 days ago. He has gone up six pounds for that victory but he could offer. One slight concern would be the drying ground with the majority of his best efforts coming with some cut in the turf.

The other one to note is Horrah at the bottom of the weights for Roger Charlton. It possibly wasn’t the strongest of Newmarket’s maidens he won last time out when a few of the field missed the break and were very keen early but he did it well on the soft ground. He has the potential and scope to improve from that success but this trip is one that is likely to see him at his optimum.

Sir Roderic (WIN)

We return to the seaside track to take in the final race on their card, which is a five furlong sprint with eight going to post.

Justice Lady is the one who is getting the vote for this race on the back of her effort at Newmarket on the last day. She was beaten by East Street Revue, who was ahead of his mark and in the process completed a quickfire double. This daughter of Dream Ahead is largely consistent and off the same mark as that run 26-days ago can regain winning ways. She has a good attitude and is willing to dig in but the slight concern is she can be quite keen in her races, so some headgear might be seen in the future.

Dean Ivory’s Jack The Laird had been having a good time on the all weather and was able to carry that form onto the turf with a second at Bath last week. He would have got closer to the winner if he was quicker out of the stalls and not slightly hampered in the run-in. He can be expected to continue his good vein of form with Paul Hanagan in the saddle.

We all know how good Robert Cowell is with sprinters, so Archimedes is one that could enter the frame. Two starts this season have slowly seen him come to hand and last season it took him three goes before getting off the mark. This son of Invincible Spirit may not be the most straightforward but the first time visor should keep his efforts focused into winning this contest.
