13:20 Newcastle For my first selection today we head to Newcastle for a handicap hurdle run over two miles. My selection in this is the Ben Haslam trained Mad For Road who is a selection that I also put up when he ran last time out. I thought he traveled like the best horse in the race that day but just looked very reluctant when asked for an effort. I would probably have not put him forward again today but I see that the blinkers go back on. If ever a horse looked like he needed an aid such as blinkers to keep his mind on the job, it’s this horse. I am hoping they have the desired effect here and if they work, the son of Galileo is sure to have a say in the finish here. De Chissler was the horse who came out victorious when Mad For Road was last seen but I think we will see a reversal in placings here. The Mark Todhunter inmate now meets that rival on twelve pound worse terms for a seven length victory. That should be enough to see them finish much closer and is definitely enough to see a reversal in placings. Of the remainder, Some Lad looks well treated as does the Lucinda Russell trained Urban Kode, although the current form of the yard is a concern. Mad For Road (WIN)
14:30 Warwick For our next selection we head to Warwick for a handicap chase run over a marathon trip of three miles and five furlongs. The one that I like in this despite returning from a lengthy absence is the Alan King trained Stoney’s Treasure. The lightly raced ten year old has been off the track for the best part of two years but looks well treated on old form. Normally you would be slow in backing horses making a return from that sort of absence but I think connections might be keen in making up for lost time. The stable is in tremendous form at the moment with ten winners from their last thirty two runners. As long as the selection is fit enough he should have a say in the finish. He probably has most to fear from the Jonjo O Neill trained Presence Felt who is the youngest runner in the lineup. In contrast to the King yard, Jonjo’s horses have been terribly out of form and a record of 0-22 over the last fortnight is evidence of that. Georgian King heads the betting here but this represents much tougher opposition than his last two contests while Incentivise is another with strong claims. 15:10 Taunton For my final selection today we travel to Taunton for handicap chase run over two miles and 110 yards. The horse that stands out in this is the Alan King trained Money For Nothing who is a horse that went in to my notebook after his last run. The gelding traveled smoothly from off the pace but was given far too much to do and was never able to catch the eventual winner. The ground was probably a lot softer than ideal that day too and he should be much more at home on this sounder surface. A mark of 105 looks extremely lenient too as I think he is easily value for at least a stone on that mark. With a clear round I think he could prove hard to beat here. The selection looks to have most to fear from course specialist Come On Annie, who’s record here reads 1-1-1 from three course visits. The bay mare has had two runs over fences though and both runs were disappointing, so unless she shows a bit more love for the larger obstacles, it is hard to put her forward despite her strong course form. I also don’t think she looks as well handicapped as the selection either. Of the remainder Un Anjou appeals most but he is going to have to produce another career best to win this.
