PADDOCKS PATENT (FRIDAY) – In Association With The Value Rater

14:50 Newbury Exceeding Power has been a model of consistency of late and off a nice low weight with George Wood claiming 7lb he could be the one to prevail in this wide open contest. He’s been placed on all three starts at this venue and although he’s yet to win off a mark this big he’s certainly giving the impression he’s capable of doing so. He had a next time out winner behind him the last time off this mark and its hard to see him out of the money in his current form. Last time out winners Corporal Maddox and Lulani will be looking to make it two on the bounce with preference for the latter who’s stable is in good form. Marcano is the likely favourite and didn’t have the rub of the green last time out at Sandown and with plenty of pace in this race for him to aim at he should be competitive. Exceeding Power (WIN)

20:15 Newmarket Predilection is worth another chance in this class 3 handicap over a mile after disappointing on his last two outings. He had excuses at Royal Ascot when a well beaten last in the Britannia where he was eased down with two furlongs to go. The ground was far to soft for him on that occasion and I was surprised that he even took his chance on that occasion as his connections have always said quick ground was the key to him. He was disappointing at York last time on quick ground however when never in contention but with the step back up to a mile here and the handicapper dropping him 4lb for that effort I’d be surprised if he wasn’t involved in the finish of this. He only has a handful of races and I personally think he has a lot more to offer. Dutch Law is the biggest danger to the selection. He’s looking for a third win on the bounce and a 6lb rise for his last win may not be enough to stop him been competitive again with Charlie Bennett keeping the ride on the Dutch Art gelding. He’s three from four at Newmarket and his only defeat here came when beaten by a neck into second by Namhroodah back in June. Five out of the eight runners have won last time out so many coming into this in good form but hopefully the selection brings his A game and if doing so could prove tough to beat for the in form John Gosden. Predilection (WIN)

20:25 Catterick Lord Rob was third over C&D at the beginning of last month in a similar affair to this off 2lb higher than today’s mark. Many may have thought that was a flash in the pan given he went off at a massive 100/1 but to be fair to him he backed it up with another solid effort at Redcar just over a week later when fifth of thirteen over a mile and a furlong. The drop back down to seven furlongs here certainly wont inconvenience him and at around the 14/1 mark he could well out run his odds for a stable who had a 12/1 winner on Wednesday which was also ridden by Paddy Mathers. Deben will no doubt be popular after a win and a second on his two visits to the track and he comes here in good form but looks short enough in the betting for my liking in a race of this nature. Saltarello has dropped to an attractive mark and could go well at a decent price also along with top weight Emblaze. Its one of those races where you could probably make a case for most of the field but the selection seems as though he’s turned a corner of late and represents good E/W value. Lord Rob (E/W)
