PADDOCKS PATENT (FRIDAY)

17:15 Wolverhampton

For today’s selections we head to Wolverhampton and the third race of the card, the 17:15. A handicap ran over a distance just short of one mile six furlongs.

Jockey Paul Mulrennan rides for Ed Dunlop here, his only booking of the day. in recent years Paul Mulrennan has ridden seven winners for the yard, six of those have been on the stables three year old horses. Today’s mount Quenelle looks a great chance to add to the tally. Unlucky on her previous start – seemingly delivered at just the right time, only to be beaten close home. The extra distance looks to be within range and if her stamina lasts out she will be a danger to all at the business end.

Angus Glen is taken as the main danger. Going down in a well fought battle last time the switch to today’s more experienced rider could be enough to gain his first handicap win.

Topaling for trainer Mark Tompkins should run into a place here. The step up in trip should be ok and if handling the switch to Tapeta should be thereabouts.

Quenelle (WIN)

17:50 Wolverhampton

The second selection runs in the 17:50. A maiden race for two year olds ran over an extended seven furlongs.

We side with Cape Cay who looked unlucky when being beaten under two lengths at Salisbury when last seen in June. Even with an interrupted passage she stayed on to the finish which gives some confidence todays extra distance will be within her capabilities. Graham Gibbons is a strong rider and hopefully can steer a clear passage to victory.

Of the newcomers Thermal Column looks to be the pick on paper. Related to some smart types as well as being from a stable who can ready a newcomer. Richard Fahey has his juveniles in cracking form recently and Thermal Column should be no exception. It doesn’t look much of a race and with the assistance of Tony Hamilton he should give the selection most to think about

Charlton Heights could surprise these for shrewd trainer Stan Moore. If the market speaks in his favour then a big run could be on the cards.

Cape Cay (Win)

19:50 Wolverhampton

The final selection runs in the last race the 19:50. A Class 5 handicap ran over one mile half a furlong.

Memoria is the least exposed making only her third start and the first in a handicap. Winner of her second start over course and distance it is not impossible that she will make it back to back wins at the venue.

Footstepsintherain is the principle danger according to the early betting and with his mark due to rise by 6lbs the David Dennis trained gelding could go one better than when just failing to reel in the winner at Kempton last time. The extra half furlong looks as if it will suit and it’s hard to see him being out of the first three on his recent efforts.

The selection here though will be the potentially well treated Wannabe King. If taking to artificial surfaces he is on a handy mark and if allowed an easy lead he will hopefully be able to kick for home and steal this from the front here causing an upset at big odds. He goes well fresh and the 64 day break after an unsuccessful flat campaign could easily revive his fortunes.

Wannabe King (E/W)
