PADDOCKS PATENT (FRIDAY)

16:00 Goodwood

Storm The Stars arrives here after finishing a creditable second in a Derby trial at Chester where he seemed ill at ease on the track. The Haggas challenger should have no problems acting here and is taken to gain compensation of sorts against some unexposed sorts today. Best Of Times has some fancy entries and has remained unbeaten since being turned over on debut, quite what he has achieved is open to question however but he is clearly improving and is afforded the upmost respect. Medrano was beaten half a length by Storm The Stars last time but is beginning to look exposed and may have been flattered as that Derby trial did look a bit messy and whilst Glan Y Gorse is unexposed and was impressive enough the last day, this requires an awful lot more. Mr Singh is another with fancy entries and hails from the all conquering stable of John Gosden, should the market speak in his favour he would need taking very seriously but he is another whom must improve significantly to take this.

This is very rough indeed and a favourite of mine, Secretinthepark almost led me into leaving the race alone. Secretinthepark is probably a good starting point as well given he was very heavily backed the last day before fading away late on at Newmarket, you had to be disappointed with that effort but the horse is clearly well handicapped and will inevitably pick one of these up before long, he needs respect but has burnt my fingers once too often and is taken on. Ninjajo comes from a yard whom excel here and could well have been aimed at this, he has a very solid profile and wants monitoring in the market. Ashpan Sam is another with chances and has Ryan Moore booked whilst the likes of Humidor and Zanetto also have claims. Likely favourite Major Jack is open to plenty of progress and was desperately difficult to take on, his price makes very little sense against some of these though so he can only be heavily respected. Slip Sliding Away has a good record here ( 4-10 ) and is as hard as nails, his jockeys 7lbs claim could prove invaluable and so he is taken to land us some place money in a wide open race.

Charlie Hills has his horses in tip top shape at the moment and is represented by the unexposed Free To Love in this. A decent third when showing plenty of pace at Salisbury last time offers plenty of hope back down to the minimum trip and the decisions by connections to book Ryan Moore for the ride is another positive. Star Fire has been handed a 7lbs penalty after being handed victory in the stewards room last time, that penalty looks very harsh considering she never actually went past and the eventual second that day has since been well beaten. Dismissing her out of hand would be folly but she does look tricky and the hood may not have the same effect as it did the last day. Bouncing Czech would be very interesting if backed as the yard are flying and though exposed looking sorts El Che and Able Spirit would be disappointing winners, both have decent chances on what they’ve achieved. Major Pusey is another to watch in the market and he has shown clear signs of speed and ability, all things considered however the Hills runner is taken to blast off and make all.
