Quite a weak looking two-year-old race this with the market being dominated by a pair of John Gosden horses. Ephrata wearing the famous Juddmonte silks has had two runs and although only beating one home on debut at Newmarket but did show some ability that day and the debut was clearly needed. She then ran at Haydock where she again dwelt at the start but then got herself in a good position but finished third after lacking the pace of the to who finished ahead. She didn’t seem to improve as much as maybe was expected and could be that she again needed the experience. She looks the best of those with experience and is ridden today by stable jockey Ted Durcan but as the other Gosden horse is a Godolphin horse ridden by a Godolphin retained jockey nothing should be read into jockey bookings.
Delphinus the other Gosden horse is an unraced Sea The Stars filly who cost £90,000 as a yearling and a massive £260.000 as a foal. She is a half sister to a 2YO Group three winner her pedigree is packed with black type winners, and she has a entry in the Group One Fillies mile at the end of the season. In a race that may not take much winning she could well make a winning debut.
Cromarty is also unraced, trained by David Simcock has an attractive pedigree and comes from a stable who can have two-year-old winners however the yard hasn’t got going with their juveniles yet with no winners from 9 runners.
Mark Johnston also runs an unraced Sea The Stars filly in Five Stars she also has an attractive pedigree and cost £48,000 as a yearling but she has no fancy entries.
As always with two-year-old races the market should be checked particularly with unraced horses. That said however, this does not look a strong race and Ephrata looks the best of the horses to have seen a racecourse before although her form so far does not amount to much. Delphinus has a lovely pedigree, her purchase price increased dramatically from foal to yearling. Her astute trainer thinks enough of what he has seen at home to give her a Group one entry and that hint should be taken. In a weak race her potential stands out here and she can enhance her trainers 20% strike rate with juveniles this season.
